5 Tips For Picking The Right Toddler Preschool
One of the first biggest decisions you have to make for your child is choosing preschool. It’s not just about finding a place that will keep your child safe while you work or take care of other responsibilities. You want a preschool that will help your toddler grow, learn, and develop socially and emotionally.
But, with the world of options out there, how do you know which preschool is right for your toddler?
To give you an idea, here are some tips to help you find the best toddler preschool that fits your needs and your child’s personality.
1. Consider the Curriculum of the Toddler Preschool
The first thing you want to look at is the curriculum of the toddler preschool you’re considering. Not all preschools are the same, and their approaches to learning can vary. Some may focus on structured academic learning, while others might take a play-based approach. It’s essential to think about what kind of environment will be most beneficial for your child.
Ask yourself what you want your child to gain from their time at preschool. If you want them to focus on developing social skills, a play-based preschool might be ideal.
2. Look Into Teacher Qualifications
Another key factor when choosing a toddler preschool is the qualifications of the teachers. The teachers will be spending a significant amount of time with your child, so it’s important to feel confident in their abilities. Preschool teachers don’t just supervise—they’re responsible for guiding your child’s development and ensuring they feel safe, loved, and supported.
You’ll want to look for preschools where the teachers have formal education and training in early childhood education. Additionally, it’s a good idea to ask about how long the teachers have been working with toddlers.
3. Evaluate Class Size and Student-to-Teacher Ratio
Class size and student-to-teacher ratio are crucial when choosing the right toddler preschool. The lower the student-to-teacher ratio, the more individualized attention your child will receive. This is especially important for toddlers, as they often need more support and supervision.
Small class sizes allow teachers to form closer bonds with the children, helping them to better understand each child’s unique needs and learning styles. A high-quality preschool will typically have a student-to-teacher ratio of around 1:8 for toddlers.
4. Visit the Preschool and Observe the Atmosphere
It’s important to visit the toddler preschool in person to get a sense of the overall atmosphere. When you walk into a preschool, you should get a good feeling—an environment where children feel comfortable, safe, and excited to learn. Are the classrooms clean, bright, and full of educational materials? Do the children look happy and engaged?
While visiting, observe how the teachers interact with the children. Are they patient, kind, and attentive? You should also pay attention to how the children respond to the teachers. Do they seem relaxed and eager to participate in activities?
5. Check the Preschool’s Safety and Security Measures
As a parent, your child’s safety is always a top priority. When selecting a toddler preschool, make sure that the facility has adequate safety and security measures in place. Start by asking about the preschool’s procedures for drop-off and pick-up. Are they secure and well-monitored? Do they have protocols for emergencies such as fire drills or lockdowns?
Additionally, ask about the preschool’s policies on health and cleanliness. Toddlers are still developing their immune systems, and preschools can be a breeding ground for germs. Make sure the preschool has clear policies on hygiene, cleaning, and handling sick children to prevent the spread of illnesses.
